One of Gibraltar’s best experiences is also one of its most overlooked: the bay is home to resident pods of wild dolphins, and the boats to see them leave from the marina a few minutes from our door. It’s a genuine highlight, brilliant with kids, and — because the dolphins live here rather than passing through — it works almost any time of year.
What you’ll see#
The Bay of Gibraltar (the Bay of Algeciras) supports three resident dolphin species — common, striped and bottlenose — and in summer you may also spot larger whales passing through the Strait. Because the pods are resident, sightings are very likely, though as with all wild animals nothing is guaranteed.
